Codex >> People

Famous personages who have left their mark on the world: past and present; good, bad, and uncaring.

Grey Society

A loosely organized network of thieves, spies, and smugglers, the Grey Society has members both inside and outside the Conclave. It has ties to the pirates of the Isles of Dusk as well as to the mercenary companies of the Borderlands. If the League has leaders, they're likely masters of Veil magic.

Stormbairn Cabal

The Stormbairns, as the members of this cabal are known, use Necromancy, Hexes, and Blight magic to control the Tornagat Bight and parts of the Isles of Dusk to the east. The most well-known members are the troll witches who use knot-magic, a variant of Hexes, to create terrible storms; goblins and even the occasional ogre claim membership as well.

The Tain

A druidic cult that believes the Retreat is the natural world's retribution for the yoke of civilization. They have a particular hatred for Stepping Stones and attempt to destroy them whenever one is found. Most members of the Tain use or are comfortable with Blight-magic, living in tainted parts of the Havenweald that most creatures find inhospitable.

Skrin, Ruhd of the Kchin Tribe

Skrin is the leader of the Kchin, one of the few goblin tribes that has sided with the people of the Conclave. A skilled Dreamsinger, Skrin is a member of the Council.

The Heresiarch

Once one of their greatest Spiritcrafters of the nix, the Heresiarch succumbed to the temptation of necromancy in order to prolong its life beyond its natural end. Learning to transfer its spirit from body to body, the Heresiarch has lived for centuries in a series of unwilling hosts, abandoning them once their spirits have been consumed by its magics. Before the nix of Charn learned of its heresy, it created an army of unliving thralls to protect itself, eventually overthrowing and driving them from the land.

Jahrm Azin

Jahrm Azin was one of the more ruthless figures in the history of Bastion. A mezoar living in Bas Atjen and a member of the Council of the Five Races during the time of the lumyn Fall, Maester Azin was most distressed to see the flood of lumyn coming into his city. His family had a good deal of power and influence among his contemporaries, and he sowed stories of fear through the streets. Thanks largely to his efforts, terrified refugees came to Bas Atjen to be blocked at the gates. They discovered that the mood in the city was not only unsympathetic to their plight but nearly hostile. High Lady Naelith of Fael'Alorn, one of the last to escape the chaos of the Fallen city, arrived before the Council and debated Azin to grant safe passage of her people and the nix who had been living in Faela to the lands of the Agenor Veld and the relative safety there. With words full of compassion she reminded the Council of the mezoars' own exodus from Mezantli centuries before and convinced its members that not all lumyn were lost to Corruption. The gates were opened, and as the lumyn and nix proved to be vital members of the Bas Atjen society in the years to come, Azin's power dwindled to the point that no mention in the city records can be found of the time and manner of his death.
